Each plate is a row of pixels, brightness varies circumferentially in N segments. The bottom of each plate naturally shades the one below; LEDs are hidden inside the rim, projecting light sideways through the gap, creating horizontal light bands in daytime. When off, only the stack silhouette is visible.
